OHS NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES:

 

PEERBOOKS AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING – WednesdaysPeerbooks Tutoring is available to all students in all grade levels who need a little extra help. Stay after school on Wednesdays and get help with your core subjects from upperclassmen. Adult supervision is present, although students can leave when they are finished. Snacks are provided. See Kaiya Sandridge or the office for more info.

VARSITY TUTORS – OngoingThe Varsity Tutors Platform gives students more opportunities to learn at their own pace. 24/7 on-demand chat tutoring and on-demand essay review are live tutoring resources to help your student with any questions about homework, classwork, or test prep. Live group classes, recorded classes, and celebrity-led StarCourses allow your student to learn more about the subjects they’re interested in, and add a touch of fun. Assessments and self-study practice problems provide opportunities to drill skills towards mastery. And college prep & admissions resources ensure that your student has the best resources available to secure their future.

Students will log into their account by going to the Varsity Tutors website and using their OHS email and password. This is being offered to students in grades 9-12. Students can gain access to the program through the company’s website at https://www.varsitytutors.com/login using their school email address. NO CENTRALIA COLLEGE & TRIO APPOINTMENTS FOR THURSDAY, MARCH 6
Due to Winter Break falling on the regularly scheduled Centralia College and Centralia College Trio outreach dates, there will be no appointments for the week. Regular appointments will resume the following week. In the meantime, students in all grades can continue working on completing their High School and Beyond Plan, updating their College Bound information, and seniors can continue working on their applications for financial aid, scholarships and trade/tech and college admissions applications.

ONALASKA SCHOLARSHIP FUND COMMITTEE NOTEBOOKS NOW AVAILABLE – Deadline March 5On Thursday, January 24, members of the Onalaska Scholarship Fund Committee (OSFC) gave a presentation and dispersed notebooks to attending seniors. The Onalaska Scholarship Fund Committee provides Onalaska High School seniors the opportunity to apply for scholarship funds at the local level. If your senior did not attend the meeting and would like to submit a notebook for consideration, they can pick up a packet in the College & Career Center. Members of the OSFC will be in the OHS College & Career Center on Wednesday, March 5 to collect submitted notebooks.

 

PACIFIC NORTHWEST COLLEGE OF ART – Event: March 5The first event in our virtual "So Your Student Wants to Be an Artist" series is coming up soon! In this first session, we'll offer parents, guardians, and educators a practical guide on how to aid students as they embark on their creative journeys. We’ll debunk the myth of the "starving artist," provide guidance for supporting your student’s growth as an artist, and share tips on resources available to your student. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight from our Associate Director and Dean of Admissions.

THE KELLY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP – Deadline March 7
The Kelly Foundation of Washington is pleased to offer the Ewing C. Kelly Scholarship. High school seniors in the state of Washington are eligible. Applicants will be judged on citizenship, academic achievement, and financial need. Each award is worth $3,000 and winners will be notified in April. Packets can be picked up in the OHS College and Career Center. They do not mail applications to individuals. Applications with all required attachments must be postmarked by March 7, 2025. Looking for Post-Secondary Options for Neurodiverse Students?

Discovery Day is your chance to learn more about Bellevue College's programs for students who are interested in earning a college degree but might not thrive in a traditional college setting:

·       Occupational & Life Skills (OLS): Explore Bellevue College's uniquely supportive skills-based associate degree program for students with learning disabilities.

·       Neurodiversity Navigators: Learn about the Neurodiversity Navigators cohort program, designed specifically to support students who identify as neurodivergent.

THE WASHINGTON AWARD FOR VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE – Deadline March 10Washington’s top career and technical education (CTE) students are encouraged to apply for the 2025 Washington Award for Vocational Excellence. This merit scholarship helps pay for college and training. The application window is open until March 10, 2025. Learn more and apply here.

A number of factors determine awards, including available funding and where students go to school. At a minimum, students will receive about $3,900 per year, for two years, or $7,800 total. Past awards have been as high as $11,700 per year, for two years. See historical funding information here. The scholarship helps students pay for tuition and other costs at Washington colleges, universities or private career schools. TWIN STAR CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP – Deadline March 15Are you planning to attend an institution of higher education in Fall 2025? The TwinStar Community Foundation wants to help you out during your journey.

We invite you to apply for one of our 2025 higher education scholarships! We are awarding up to forty-four $2,000 scholarships to members who plan to attend an institution of higher education in Fall 2025. In addition to our forty-four $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors AND continuing education students, we also have four specialty legacy scholarships for members of TwinStar and Northwest Community Credit Union. Students are eligible to apply and potentially receive a scholarship every year of their continuing education post-high school. We'll begin accepting applications on February 1st. The application deadline is March 15th, 2025.

Please note that for the 2025 scholarship year, we are continuing to combine our previously separated high school scholarships and higher education scholarships into one application and selection process. THE HAGAN SCHOLARSHIPS – Deadline March 15The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship, providing recipients with the opportunity to achieve their goals and graduate college debt-free. The scholarship provides $2,000 to help pay for essential items to attend college and up to $7,500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters. Free workshops, Free Schwab Brokerage Accounts, and Free Study Abroad provide recipients with a practical understanding of important life skills not typically covered in the school curriculum. Hagan Scholars have attended 637 colleges and universities located in 49 states and the District of Columbia and have studied abroad in 58 countries.

The Hagan Graduate Scholarships are for Hagan Scholars who have graduated college while in the Hagan Scholarship Program and are good for up to four additional semesters in college, providing up to $7,500 each semester to attend graduate school or the first two years of a professional program. COMMUNITY FARMERS MARKET OF CHEHALIS 2025 POSTER CONTEST – Deadline March 31
The Community Farmers Market of Chehalis is holding its annual poster design contest for the 2025 farmers market season. Prizes of $200 in farmers market tokens are up for grabs for the winning artists whose designs are chosen. Winning artwork will be printed as the Community Farmers Market of Chehalis’ official posters, and will also be distributed and displayed throughout local stores and public spaces, according to a Community Farmers Market of Chehalis news release.

 

Entries are due by March 31, and each design must be in 11-by-17 inch vertical format. Entries must be emailed to info@chehalisfarmersmarket.com with the subject line reading “Poster Competition Submission.” Entrants must also include their full name and a phone number. For larger files, applicants can use file-sharing services such as Dropbox or WeTransfer. The judging process will begin on April 1 and is anticipated to take a week. Winners will be notified soon after.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF SOUTH PUGET SOUND SCHOLARSHIP – Deadline April 7 Through the incredible generosity of our donors, the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound manages 25 scholarship funds that offer a wide range of scholarship awards and encourage students of all backgrounds and educational interests to apply. We also want to extend a sincere thank you to our many scholarship donors, advisors, and scholarship committee members for their investment in our student's bright futures this year and for many years to come!
