Video Productions Syllabus



2019 - 2020


SCOPE: Video productions class is designed to teach you the use of video equipment,

and to produce video programs in several formats. Incorporated within the class is use of camera equipment, lighting, graphics, sound, lenses and visualization,

recording, editing and other production system components. Script writing and

public speaking is a vital component to the class. Also included is the production

of news broadcast, special projects and a video yearbook.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the class the student will be able to:

1. Operate all facets of a video camera including the use of microphones

and tripods

2. Develop skills using Final Cut Pro including special effects, dissolving,

and sound dubbing

3. Develop and improve writing skills including news reporting, scripting,

and technical descriptions.

4. Develop limited theatrical skills as required.

5. Plan, design, and create several projects requiring the knowledge and

skills of video productions.

REQUIREMENTS: These are the things you must bring to class everyday:

EXPECTATIONS: To assure a positive and meaningful learning environment the following

will be expected and enforced:

1. Be on time - this class will be taught and conducted much like a small

production company. Therefore, lateness will not be tolerated. You are

required to be in the room when the final bell rings or if the door is

still open.

2. Students will ask first to use equipment.

3. Students are to respect school property and equipment. We are dealing very expensive equipment throughout the district. Therefore, it is imperative that everyone takes the greatest care and caution when handling equipment, and conducting class projects around the district.

4. Students will be expected to work in teams using team concepts.

this will be explained in detail later.

8. Students must use classroom pass and also receive instructors permission

before leaving class.

9. Students are to clean up after themselves. A general rule of success:

Leave areas cleaner than you found them.

GRADES: Grades based on points under the following criteria:






ASSIGNMENTS: More than likely you will have some type of assignment or quiz to turn in

daily. If you are absent you have 1 day for every day of absences to make

up. You are responsible to get notes from your neighbor and all

assignments, handouts, notes and quizzes.

OUTSIDE SHOOTS: There are times you will need to make a shoot outside of the classroom.

This may be on the campus, at the grade school or middle school. When

preparing a shoot in a classroom it is important that you check with the

teacher in advance before you make a shoot. Whenever out of the class-

room you are to present yourself as professionals and should not interfere

in any way with the normal operations of the school or any class.

EDITING SUITE: The editing computers are the most expensive piece of equipment utilized In the lab. The editing computer allows the user to cut, use special effects, dissolves and sound dubbing to your video production.

CAMERAS: There are three types of cameras used in the class. You will learn to use

all of them along with the use of microphones and tripods.

VIDEO TAPES: Each one of you will be given a video tape for you own private use, assign-

ments and special projects. It is important that you catalog your tapes

so that it will be easy to access the video clip you want. When cataloging

tapes, always use pencil to mark with in the event you erase some of its


WRITING: This class will require more writing then you would think: Writing will

include news reporting, scripting for how to video, story boards,

commercials, and creative script writing. You will also be required to

write technically in how to use equipment.

THEATRICAL: Not only will you learn to work behind the camera, you will learn skills

in front of a camera. This can be a rather nerve breaking experience,

however we are in the same boat and over time, it will become more

natural to you. The important thing is that we are here to encourage

one another and promote each ones improvement. Put downs and

negativism will not be tolerate.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: We as a class will be asked from time to time to produce a video

for school use. These projects will become part of your

assignment and grade when needed. There may be projects that

you may not be interested in doing, however, you will continue to

develop skills in these projects about yourself and the art of this

class. This class will also maintain and create for Digital Sports.
