AP English Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition, taught in alternate years, prepare students for the respective AP exams in May, where the score earned will determine the amount of college credit granted. The cost of the AP test is around $80, with some help available for students who are unable to pay. Students must check with the college or university they plan to attend to see what kind of credit is awarded for the test. All students who take the class are encouraged to sit for the AP exam.
AP English Literature and Composition is a full year course taught in the odd years. This course focuses on the elements of literature and covers literature from many time periods. Students learn how to hone their analytical skills and write literary analysis essays. The course covers all genres, but focuses on fiction.

AP English Language and Composition is a full year course taught in the even years. This course focuses on non-fiction, including opinion pieces and historical accounts. Students learn to read like a writer, studying the interaction among writer, audience, and subject, and learning to identify and use rhetorical strategies in order to engage and persuade their audience.
